Another Batch of Read It Later Updates!

Nate Weiner - Posted in Blog, , , ,

The Big Ones:

Online Access - Manage your list online, in any browser or mobile device.  In Safari, Internet Explorer, or an iPhone.  Click the ‘Access Anywhere’ link at the top of your reading list for more.

Search - The tag dropdown has been replaced with a search-as-you-type field.  It will search through the titles, urls, and tags of the items in your Reading List.
Suggested By: Zeke, Praveen

Auto-Syncing - For those of you who forgot to sync your reading list before heading home after work, now you won’t have to.  If you are using sync, Read It Later will automatically sync your list in the background after starting up and every few hours afterwards.
Suggested By: bds, James, Rob, How to Geek

More Options to Customize Read It Later:

Improved Options screen - The options dialog got a revamp and brings better organization to your preferences.

Unread Items Counter - View the number of items in your reading list.
Suggested By: the non hacker, rayphua

Auto Mark as Read - You can now set Read It Later to mark pages as read after opening them.
Suggested By: Wayne, the non hacker, Sergio Santos

Auto Tags - Set custom tags to be added to every page you save.
Suggested By: Raydancer, Ken

Click to Save Button - An optional button can be added to your status bar to activate Click to Save Mode without a keyboard shortcut.
Suggested By: Wayne, Todd

Custom Keyboard Shortcuts - You can now customize your keyboard shortcuts to any combo you like, not just ALT.
Suggested By: Mike Harris

The Small Stuff:

Read Offline Improvements - When you are offline, items that have not been saved for offline viewing will appear dimmed out.
Suggested By: Praveen

Empty Titles - Pages without titles will be replaced with their url.
Suggested By: Dan Gale Rosen

More Languages - With help of the translation team (made up entirely of Read It Later users), Read It Later is continuing to be localized in more and more languages.  Want to help?

Where to Get This Version (0.9810)

Get Read It Later!

What’s Next?

Read It Later will officially be striped of it’s Beta suffix after one more big set of updates.  I’m very excited for what I’ve got planned in the coming update, it will take Read It Later full circle.

  1. Thank you so much for using my suggestion. I really appreciate it :)

    July 30th, 2008 Todd
  2. I would like to suggest a function: to save the “Session Saver” data with the pages marked by “Read it Later”. This functionality is also available in a similar add-on: Taboo. Saving the Session data makes it possible to restore the scroll location and form fields, when opening the pages.
    Thanks in advance.

  3. You keep making an already incredible extension even better. Your attention to continually improving it in even the smaller details is exemplary and much appreciated. Thanks for all your work!

  4. super firefox extension

    August 1st, 2008 Bubu
  5. I suggest updating page titles on the saved URLs every now and then. Sometimes I’ll use Read It Later on a page that is down because of bandwidth and in a couple days go to my reading list to view it, and I won’t remember which one is which.

I also have another suggestion–and this is the big one: There should be an option that when you open a page from your reading list, it could automatically be taken off.

Great extension, it is one of my top 5 for sure.
    Thanks!

  6. @RTmag:

Just wanted to let you know that the feature you asked for was just added in since version 0.9810. Look in the General Read It Later options: ‘After opening an item in your list…’: select ‘mark as read’.

  7. Dude, your plugin is absolutely, freakin amazing. Now that that’s out of the way. I have two computers that use the extension. Will there be two different read it later list sites, or can I have it as one?

    August 2nd, 2008 Chris
  8. Thank you for accommodating our suggestions into the add-on!

I believe this add-on will become unmatched because of the openness to suggestions and of course the hard work and passion.

  9. the search field (filter) doesn’t work well when searching by tags (it works well when seraching by title or url)

    August 2nd, 2008 diegodd
  10. @Chris

You can Sync your list between any number of computers. For instructions on how to setup syncing check out:

  11. @diegodd: Are you searching on the online list or in the extension? Also, can you give me some examples of the tags you are using?

    August 3rd, 2008 Nate Weiner
  12. @Nate: i am searching on the “your reading list” menu within the extension (i haven’t used the online list yet).

The problem is that it doesn’t show the tagged pages, when i search by tag.

UPDATE as i im writing, im testing, and i have found this:
many of my tags have a slash (/) in the name, so maybe thats the problem, because if i search for a tag without a slash in its name, it shows all the results correctly (JUST as searching bookmarks in the Firefox Library, which is the expected behaviour, right?).

so could you fix that? or i would have to rename my tags with something without a slash?.

Here are examples of some of my tags (each row is only ONE tag):

    apps/utils/sw
    art/des
    mac/linux
    firefox
    hacks
    tips/tricks

I wouldnt like to rename them, so coould you fix it?

    THANK YOU!!!

  13. also, i think you should have a specific page to post the version changes of the extension (e.g. from 0.9810 to 0.9811, even if they are only minor changes or bugfixes).

it will help us know if a particular problem is fixed in a given version. also, there is no direct way of knowing which one is the latest (or at least i havent find it) other than from the firefox addons window itself (which by the way doesnt show the version changes when pressing the button).

  14. A small request to Nate - I would really like an option to remove the context menu option, as I am used to having the copy option at the top when selecting text. I use the other ways to tag a page, so an option to remove the context menu option would be much of an improvement for me.

  15. This simple (becoming advanced =]) program is amazing.

    Keep up the awesome work.
    Helps me alot!

    August 6th, 2008 J
  16. I agree you need to get a version control site up asap. Some of the updates found in firefox, that you send out via email and here do no coincide. Your best bet is to get a system separate from your blog and comments. Something with version control and ticket support to make things a helluva alot easier on us and you.

Google code can host you and there are more advanced subversion stuff out there too. http://beanstalkapp.com/ if you need help email me.

    August 6th, 2008 Rob
  17. @Rob

I’m already ahead of you on there :) It’s in the works. Might be a while, but it’s in the works for sure.

    August 6th, 2008 Nate Weiner
  18. it would be great if we could manage the websites in folders. thanks for the great addon

  19. I’m just gonna say one thing, with creating this add-on you just removed the cause of my distress and now I can’t live without this add-on ;) Life just got so much easier :) Big thanks!!

  20. Guys you Rock!! Readitlater is one of my most useful applications. really made my life easier. Also the speed and direction that you’re taking the product is great. really intelligent product updates.

    August 8th, 2008 Tim
  21. Really like it,I always use it everyday,I think should you strengthen the RSS function,

    August 8th, 2008 ????
  22. just add the option to save the graphic and styles from the webpage also(whole page) not just text for offline viewing

    August 9th, 2008 T
  23. Awesome extension. One key thing I would love to see is for this to be integrated (optionally of course) into the Firefox sidebar, that would finally make the absence of Linkpad in FF3 very suitable.

    August 10th, 2008 Doug
  24. A critical feature for me is to select and sync articles to be read offline on my iPhone. I love this program for my laptop, but I have to use InstaPaper for my iphone; I’d rather use ReadItLater.

    August 10th, 2008 M
  25. G’day. I’ve been using this extension for about a month now and it’s been going great, syncing between my home and work computers. Now I’ve noticed that the two computers are not syncing like I expect them to. The online RSS feed combines all the pages I’ve ticked to read later, so that’s good but my local reading list doesn’t update to show pages added from the other computer. I’m sure it used to do that, though there’s been a few upgrades now since I first started using it. Any suggestions as to why the reading list isn’t syncing between computers (but is online)? Thanks

    August 12th, 2008 Richard
  26. This is a wonderful plugin that has changed the way I work.

However, some problems using it on an Asus eeePC running XP:

    - The screen resolution of the eee is not terribly high and there’s not a lot of real estate. I deal with this by making the text small, but the reading list popup does not respond to “change text size” commands.
    - I also deal with the above problem by using full screen mode a lot. The reading list won’t open with the key command when in full screen mode, and in fact it will disappear if it’s open when you go to full screen!
    - The biggest problem of all, though, is that the shorter vertical resolution means that the bottom of the reading window is cut off. This means that I can’t page through the list! I can only see the first six items in each of the “sort by” views.

I hope these get resolved soon, but all in all, great work!

    August 17th, 2008 impressed
  27. I am having the same problem as Richard above- the extension will no longer sync between my computers, but the online list is combined as it should be.

    August 19th, 2008 Karin Dalziel
  28. THANK YOU. I have tried using a temporary bookmark folder, tags, delicious… and nothing seemed to be just right. Read It Later looks like it’s a keeper.

    August 21st, 2008 Nosgoroth
  29. can u “save it later” all of the open tabs in firefox? if not, that would be a good additional feature

    August 21st, 2008 Matt
  30. @Matt - That’s already in RIL! Just right click the tabs and select ‘Save tabs for later’.

    August 22nd, 2008 Nate Weiner
  31. This is a very good addon!

But I think it would be nice if we could change the language configuration manually, because some translated phrases are too big and brake the ReadItLater’s design.

    August 22nd, 2008 B.Cardoso
  32. This is a great plugin. May I make a suggestion? How about a “Save link to read later” option when one right-clicks over a link? That way I could add pages to the read-it-later list without actually opening them in new tabs. Now that really would streamline my browsing.

    August 23rd, 2008 Tim V-B
  33. @Tim V-B

Your suggestion is already included! If you right click a link you should see an option to save it for later.

More importantly, have you tried Click to Save mode? It allows you to save lots of links very quickly. Check out the demo video on:
    http://www.ideashower.com/ideas/launched/read-it-later/

    August 23rd, 2008 Nate Weiner
  34. @B. Cardoso

You mentioned your localization seems to have some formatting issues. Which language pack are you using?

    August 23rd, 2008 Nate Weiner
  35. I noticed that one can tag the same web page several times in the “read it later list”. Is is possible to implement a check that could prevent the same page to be present several times in the list ? Thanks in advance for your good job :-)

    August 25th, 2008 Phil
  36. Like the idea of Read it later and service - perhaps some sort of system clock based reminding feature? I’ve come across some sites pertaining to future events and although I can read it about later on, it would be nice to have some sort of alarm clock function to alert me when to read certain timely articles/web-sites later!

    August 25th, 2008 johncon
  37. Hey, a friend told me about your plugin and I’ve given it a whirl! It’s a great idea!

I read a few feeds at work but tend not to visit the actual sites linked *because* i’m at work!

At the moment, i drag links onto my delicious ‘tag’ button and it’ll add it to my delicious. It’s cumbersome but it works!

I’d love ReadItLater to be able to add links to it’s list just by me dragging links onto the button! Can this be added at some point?

    August 26th, 2008 MrQwest
  38. Hi, i have a suggestion /feature request:

i love the option to search (filter) on my reading list with my tags, and it now works perfectly (thanks for fixing that issue), but what i’d like is that when i search for a tag (or any other term), and having the results displayed in the list, the next time i click the toolbar button, i want to be sent to a page but ONLY WITHIN the results already shown by my term/tag. that would be much easier that way to navigate through pages with specific themes, and not having to reopen the list manually and clicking a new page from the results. it will also be nice to have a count of the number of unread items (like it does now) BUT showing only the number of pages matching the filter search, (and it could be other color, to remember us that number is only for search results and not for the whole pages in the list. I hope i made myself clear (english is not my native language, its spanish) so please if you didn’t understand my idea, reply me (here or by my mail) so i can try to explain it better ;)

    THANKS FOR THE AWESOME EXTENSION!!!!!!!

    August 26th, 2008 diegodd
  39. It’s probably pretty simple but I can’t figure out how to remove a URL from the list. Help?

    thanks in advance

    August 28th, 2008 Lron58
  40. @Lron58

You can remove a page one of two ways:
    1. Open the page and uncheck the checkmark in the navigation bar.
    2. Open your reading list (click the Reading List button) and uncheck the item there.

    Hope that helps!

    August 28th, 2008 Nate Weiner
  41. This is an awesome add-on!!!!!
I have it set up so I click on any page in Firefox I want to read later, and my Thunderbird collects it with my other feeds.

    September 6th, 2008 tincanman2010
  42. Can’t wait for this on Chrome! Read It Later is an extension I don’t plan to leave behind.

    September 6th, 2008 Fernando Correia
  43. Hello. I really wish there was an option to change the favicon that you click to read it later. The check is nice but options can’t hurt. :)

    Thanks for listening.

    September 7th, 2008 jody
  44. Very nice for me would be a CoolIris type preview of reading list entries. Sometimes the list gets soooo long I forget what I needed to read!

    September 8th, 2008 Dave Warner
  45. I JUST applied the latest update, and it broke both the menu functionality (it now pops up at the bottom of my screen and is not usable - only the topmost line is visible) as well as the menu button pages counter. I am running Vista on a well maintained, trouble-free laptop - and MY FIREFOX CONFIGURATION IS HERE (as a txt file):
    http://drop.io/anpla3g [infolister.txt]. Best of luck!

    September 12th, 2008 James Kirchmer
  46. I should also note, regarding my above bug report, that the “menu functionality” refers specifically to the Firefox BUTTON *drop-down* menu. In sum, this info now appears OFF SCREEN. To possibly clarify, James Kirchmer ~ p.s. ~ clicking on the button does however still work, for reading stories - and the address line functions also appear to be ok. Thanks very much for listening!

    September 12th, 2008 James Kirchmer
  47. Fantastic extension - I used to have multiple windows open for later reading, but this is a much much better way to handle information flow.

One small suggestion about syncing: rather than use the RIL-generated sync name (that no-one can remember), allow users to generate their own sync names (like “Fred_work_list”) and passwords. You can make rules for the names, like no spaces, etc., so that they can still be used for the URLs.

(Internally the program can map these to the RIL sync name of course, so it does not need to be such a huge change to your program).

    September 14th, 2008 Alfred Milgrom
  48. @Alfred

You can change the feed_id / password. Click the ‘Access Anywhere’ button at the top of your reading list for more info.

    September 15th, 2008 Nate Weiner
  49. I’d like to be able to move Read It Now to a different toolbar.

    September 15th, 2008 AngelSong
  50. @AngelSong

You should be able to move Read It Later’s book icon to another toolbar. What happens when you do?

    September 16th, 2008 Nate Weiner
  51. In my Firefox 3.0.3 (Linux-version) Read It Now shows in window which cuts right part of the content :(

    September 28th, 2008 killest
  52. @Killest,

Would it be possible to send a screenshot of the problem your having?

    September 28th, 2008 Nate Weiner
  53. The “Read it later” button does not show up on my toolbar? I have WinXP Pro/Firefox 3.0.3

    October 27th, 2008 Mike Moyers
  54. I’m running RIL on two separate machines, both running XP Pro, with FF 3.0.3. I’m having Location Bar issues on both machines. When I first start up the browswer, the Location Bar is “dead”. The RIL icons don’t appear in it, and I cannot go to any URLs I type in. I have to “Customize” the toolbars, remove the Location Bar and then return it to it’s original locattion.

Even after I re-enable the Location Bar, the RIL icons are separated. I always see separate check marks for Save and Mark as read. Screen shot at http://bayimg.com/paLoAAaBk.

Is this an RIL issue? Probably conflict with another extension?

    Thanks

  55. Hi! I’ve got an irritating problem. I have repeatedly deleted one link from my list but it won’t go. I uninstalled and reinstalled Read it Later but the link is still there, which I find odd.

This is the first problem I’ve had with it. It’s a very nice gadget and I use it all the time.

    November 25th, 2008 Gina Langridge
  56. Gina,

Is it just one specific item that is a problem or can you not remove any links?

Also, when you say you are deleting it, are you deleting the bookmark through Firefox’s bookmarks or marking it as read through RIL?

Can you send me the URL as well?

    November 25th, 2008 Nate Weiner
