Read It Later - Ver 0.6

Nate Weiner - Posted in Blog, ,

If you can’t tell, I’m trying to crank out these updates like mad. Due to the recent exposure on lots of sites (including huge ones like Lifehacker), there has been an insane amount of downloads of the extension in the past week (well over 15,000). Way more than I had ever expected before the extension broke out of Beta. Unfortunately this meant a lot of people have been downloading a project I’d label far from finished. Hence the mad dash effort to pump out updates to make sure everyone who downloaded the extension has a good running version.

So I’m pleased to announce version 0.6 which has some big fixes all of you have asked for.

What’s New

  • The biggest update: The buttons can now be moved from toolbar to toolbar! Also, the buttons will automatically shrink when placed on a toolbar other than the nav-bar. This way they won’t overstretch the height of your smaller tool bars.
To move the buttons just right click a toolbar and go to ‘Customize…’, then drag each button into the desired place.
  • I’ve rearranged the drop-downs. Options are now under the Reading List button. That way the options are always accessible. You will notice an empty drop-down under the ‘Read Later’ button, I’ll eventually add some advanced filing features there.
  • There is a new ‘Open all of reading list in tabs‘ feature. Clicking this will open every link in your reading list into multiple tabs.
  • Though you lose some abilities (such as marking as read and easily viewing your list), the extension will work when there are no buttons on your toolbars. This makes it much more stable.
  • Added a custom icon to the add-on list.

If you have problems with Version 0.6

While Firefox is open:

  1. Go up to the top ‘Tools’ Menu and select ‘Error Console’ from the dropdown
  2. Select the ‘errors’ tab
  3. Click ‘clear’
  4. Restart Firefox
  5. Open the Error Console again.
  6. If the button is still not showing, are there any errors listed in the error console and if so, what are they? Leave the error messages in the comments.

And finally, just want to say you guys are awesome.

Thanks to everyone, your support has been amazing!

  1. “Unfortunately this meant a lot of people have been downloading a project I’d label far from finished.”

…don’t worry the majority of the people who read sites like this or Lifehacker know the meaning of the word beta. Personally I won’t complain if not everything works perfect… its a beta. :)

  2. Would it be possible to have small icons included? Under View->Toolbar->Customize I like to have “Use Small Icons” checked so I get that much more browser windows space. Setting this, however, seems to have no effect on the Read It Later icons.

  3. I’m not sure what you call which button, but the one that you’re supposed to use to save bookmarks on digg or whatever doesn’t seem to be working anymore for me. When I click the pulldown it says, “Advanced save or later features will be added here soon.”

In the error console I see several entries that read as follows:
    Rlist[i][ii] has no properties
    chrome://isreaditlater/content/isreaditlater.js

Those are the only errors that I think relate to this extension. Keep up the good work, Read It Later is a wonderful idea.

  4. For me there is a little thing that could be better. Is it possible to save the links online? This would be great for reading them when you are on the road, e.g. on the mobile phone. What do you think about this?

  5. Hi Nate, Thanks a lot for the update.. good work.
I have one question: I really want to install the new version right now but i have already marked a lot of pages to read it later, so if i install it now, am i going to lose all these pages?? should i read it first or bookmark it before i install the new version??

    awaiting your reply,

  6. Hey John

You can get version 0.61 on the website now (or by getting the update in Firefox).

I’ve fixed the ‘use small icons’ problem, sorry for that.

In regards to the other issues you are having, I’m have some trouble trying to reproduce them. First, I want to say that clicking the ’save for later’ button will save the current page to your list, the dropdown is just a placeholder for future advanced features, so there is nothing in there yet.

The Rlist has no properties error that you are receiving is very peculiar however. Do you have anything in your Read It Later bookmark folder other then bookmarks? (ex. sub-folders, livemarks, etc) Would you mind exporting your Read It Later folder so I can see what’s in there and try to reproduce? I sent you an email to which you can reply.

Thanks for all of your help!

  7. Thomas, I’d love to be able to do that, I’ll keep it in mind for future updates.

  8. Nate,

I am still only getting one button, the “Read Something” Button. It initially shows up in the address bar. I was able to move it to other bars. It displays a list of links I have selected with the “Read it later” command in the Contextual Menu, as well as this page, http://www.ideashower.com/read-later-empty/, saying my reading list is empty, even though I have marked several pages to read later and they show up in the drop down list from the “read something from your reading list” button. I am confused about the “your reading list is empty” page.

The “Read it Later” button doesn’t show up on any of the tool bars and I don’t see it in the inventory of buttons under ..view/toolbars/customize. And I don’t see a “Mark as Read” button.

I am using Leopard 10.5.1 on an iMac Intel Duo, FFX 2.0.0.9, and Read It Later 0.6.

I know I am going to like Read It Later once I get it working.

    Thanks for the help.

  9. Lara,
Upgrading should not affect your reading list. However if you want to be 110% certain, you can just make a copy of your list by making a copy of your ‘Read It Later’ folder under ‘Organize Bookmarks’ in Firefox.

  10. Thanks Nate, I have just installed the new version and it works fine.

    November 18th, 2007 Lara Saad
  11. 0.61 got rid of the “Rlist[i][ii] has no properties” error message as well as successfully reducing the size of the icons with “Use Small Icons” checked. Also the ’save for later’ button no longer says “Advanced save for later features will be added here soon.”

The only thing that appears not to be working correctly is that in version .521 I noted the ‘Save For Later’ button would change to have a red check mark on saved pages. Now it remains with the green arrow. However, it appears to successfully function in adding pages to my reading list and on reading list pages it shows the various “and add to…” items.

Don’t be sorry for having bugs in a beta, this extension is great and worth waiting for a fix when things break. It would be nice to have previous versions available for download when an upgrade makes it unusable for something though. :-)

  12. I moved the “Read Something” button from the address bar to one of my tool bars and restarted. Now the “Read Later” shows up in the button inventory. I moved it to the tool bar and everything seems to be working:-)

  13. Love the extension.

    Note getting the colour change when ‘bookmarking’ using the updated version;

Also, there’s a limit of 11 visible pages at the moment, right? Could that be extended?

Finally, love all the other changes!

  14. when i have read a page in “read it later”, i think the the page bookmark in the read it later folder should be delete.
After i reader all the page ,the tem-folder should be empty. i suggest.

  15. My buttons not showing up problem was solved with version 6. Thanks for all your hard-work!

I agree with John, don’t be sorry, this is a wonderful addition to Firefox and an all around great extension. We expect bugs, especially since you’ve noted over and over that it’s still in beta.

Finally it’s usable for me. Yay! Again, thanks for all your time and effort.

  16. I get an error 228 when I try to install. I followed the clear Errors and restarted with no improvements. Suggestions?

    Thanks,

  17. John,

After adding the page to your reading list by clicking the icon with the green arrow, does it now switch to a icon with a red checkmark?

    November 19th, 2007 Nate Weiner
  18. Well, it started to work at one point, but now it’s not working again. I had the icon sizing problem that John mentioned, and it was fixed with .61, but now nothing at all happens when I try to save a page or link for latet. I looked a the error console after trying ’save page for later’, and the following message had been generated. Hope it helps.

    uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)[nsIRDFContainer.Init]” ns result: “0×80004005 (NS_ERROR_FAILURE)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://broeser/content/bookmarks/bookmarks.js “” anonymouse :: line 1624″ data:no]

  19. Would like to see a way to add current page to Reading List. Yes, I know I can add it as a bookmark to the folder, but would like a quicker way.

  20. Nate, regarding if the green arrow icon turns into a red check mark, it depends. I did some playing around and discovered the following:

When the “Save this page for later” icon is on the Navigation Toolbar, it uses the green arrow icon at all times, regardless if I’m on a page in my reading list or not.

Fooling around with icon placement, I experimented with putting the icons on on the Menu Bar. In this case the icon will switch to the red check mark when I’m on pages in my reading list.

Ultimately I decided I prefer the buttons on the navigation bar, so in my case it doesn’t change. But everything is working perfectly otherwise. I see no error messages that look like they relate to Read It Later in my Error Console.

  21. Thanks for this usefull tool :)

What would be much nicer is the possibility to save the reading list on a server of our choice, so that we can share the reading list between, for example, our pc at work and the home one… THAT would be great :)

  22. Yep, just saw that thomas gave the idea before me… Sorry.

  23. Nate,

Any chance of having the option to open the Reading List in a sidebar in Firefox? - I think it would be convenient to have the list open for a period of time.

  26. Version 0.3 worked ok, even if it was ugly. But since upgrading to 0.61; my list of sites to read later was lost and I cannot add any sites to the list. WinXP and Firefox 2.0.0.10. The error console shows the following error every time I try to add something to my read it later list:
Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80004003 (NS_ERROR_INVALID_POINTER) [nsIRDFContainer.Init]” nsresult: “0×80004003 (NS_ERROR_INVALID_POINTER)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://browser/content/bookmarks/bookmarks.js :: anonymous :: line 1634″ data: no]

  27. Sometime add/checked icon does not update properly and you get errors like this one:

    Error: uncaught exception: [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE) [nsIRDFService.GetResource]” nsresult: “0×80070057 (NS_ERROR_ILLEGAL_VALUE)” location: “JS frame :: chrome://isreaditlater/content/isreaditlater.js :: isRitL_MarkAsRead :: line 387″ data: no]

  28. A keyboard shortcut would be good to save a page for later and secondly mark a page as read.

  29. It’s not working for me…

Installed v0.6 in Firefox 2.0.0.11 Pressing the icon to read later, icon changes but *no links* are added to the read it later list. Any idea on what to check?

  30. (v0.61 DOES work)

    December 3rd, 2007 Maikel
  31. Thanks for the awesome extension! I have problems where I will get a pop up saying: “There are problems with the Read It Later Extension. Please restart Firefox.” After doing so, it usually loses the Read It Later folder (I unfortunately have duplicates of the folder due to Google Browser Sync).

When I try and add to the list I get the unhandled exception error as well mentioned above.

    December 4th, 2007 Chris
  32. Seeing similar behavior to what Chris stated in his 12/4 post.
Fix so far has been to go to the Options > Select Read It Later Bookmark folder after starting FF.
    This is on FF 2.0.0.11

  33. After using Fullerscreen extension (firefox turn out to full screen without bars) and returning to normal mode, the Read It Later extension’s icons are small instead of the big ones. Also I do not have any idea why sometimes this extension works and others don’t. It seems it is random at least for me.

  36. It would be nice to have some sort of classification/categorization of the bookmarks. Maybe folders or maybe title editing. The idea is for me to separate bookmarks into “Reat it later”, “Watch it later”, and “Listen it later”. I can’t use sound all the time, neither I am always on a fast connection. If I could easily get only those bookmarks that apply for the current moment (sound on, high speed on), it would be extra great! :)

Otherwise, a very useful and nicely implemented extension. Thanks and keep up the good work.

  37. I don’t even have Read Buttons. Where are they? Yes I installed the extension and it’s running. I got the Read this Page later in contextmenu, but no Read List Buttons. :-/

  38. I am unable to start firefox. I get this message “Problem detected with the read it later extension, try restarting firefox”. When I restart I get the same msg again.

  39. Tried to add your awesome plugin to Flock. Worked great on Powerbook but on iMac logs the following error:
