Overview

LiftSift is a light-weight tool made to discover a user’s perfect skiing destination based lift-ticket price, vertical, distance, and a number of other options.

How It Came to Be

While trying to plan a ski trip with some friends I realized that there was no simple way to get an overall view of all the resorts in the US and what their prices were.  This meant that I’d have to first know of a resort, then Google it and look through their website.  Or at least pick a region, then drill down by state -> resort -> price.  Either way, both approaches were very slow.

I wanted it the other way around.  I wanted to be able to see what places had the best prices and I wanted to be able to filter out the small hills (<1000ft).  On top of that, I did not want to have to be limited to only the resorts I had heard of.

So instead, I spent a Sunday afternoon putting together the site and hand entering data and LiftSift was born.

Narrow It Down

LiftSift is dead simple, so there is not much more to explain!  Open it up and move some sliders around.  It’s easy to sift through the list.

Say you want to find a ski resort with at least 2000 ft of vertical, within a day’s driving distance for under $70 a day?  No problem.

Drag the price slider to show $0 -> $70, the vertical slider to 2000 ft+ and the distance slider to 0 miles -> 800 miles.  The list will automatically update to show you your options.

  1. Another very awesome idea with beautiful execution Nate. All in 10 days too, not bad.

I don’t ski that much but I can definitely see this as helping people. Another idea to add might be a rating system like stars or comments next to the lifts for more community involvement. Hey, maybe even expand even more for a mountain search/rating site!

  2. I checked out the site, and liked the idea… however, I noticed that even though I can set my location to somewhere in Canada, and the distance logic works, if I go to add a new mountain, I’m given a ‘country’ field… but only a list of US states, and a ‘postal code’ field that’s too short to hold a postal code- only a US zip code.

It seems that you should either drop the country field for now, and admit it’s US-centric, or properly expand it to allow entries from other areas.

Otherwise, a great and useful idea - thanks!

  3. It doesn’t seem to list any of the Canadian mountains. Not sure if they would be easy to add or not, but would be nice.

  4. @Dirk @Compy

Working on adding Canadian resorts, as well as others from all over the world. Had several CA resorts submitted by users this week which I just pushed live.

I also expanded the postal code field to accept longer codes.

  5. Great tool! Only problem I see is that the site lists Ski Plattekill as being 9 miles from NYC, when its really 154 miles away…keep up the good work!
