Google Analytics Markers

Idea # - Posted in Wish List Comments (12) - Traffic & Stats - Updates  -

The next target in my continuing series of “I wish it had this” ideas is Google Analytics.

What I’d like to have is the ability to tag days with information about what happened. So that when peaks occur I can mark them with things like ‘Frontpage of Digg’ or ‘Mentioned on Lifehacker’.

When looking at recent weeks it’s not too hard to remember why you had peaks in traffic, but not when you roll back and look at traffic over the course of months or a year. The graph may look pretty but it doesn’t really help you understand what influenced the patterns you see.

This technology isn’t anything new. In fact, Google already uses it on their stock pages (Example). They do this to let traders get a better feel for what caused the stock to jump or drop without having to individually research each and every day. Well, analyzing stock graphs is not much different than analyzing traffic volume, both are highly influenced by day to day events.

A Step Further

In the same vein, I think that some of these markers on peak days could be generated automatically. Almost all spikes in traffic are a result of one page, and generally are from one source. So when there was a large spike in traffic, Google could slap on a default marker including the top content page for the day and the top referring source. So if for example, you wrote a blog post about ‘10 Puppies Wearing Hats’, and it got picked by The Association of Puppy Hat Wearers who linked you and sent you 10,000 visitors; Analytics could then mark the day with your puppy post and the referring source and you’d be covered.

Even further, if Google simply added the top content page and the top source of the day to the information when you moused over any day, you would be able to very quickly get a grasp of what was causing your peaks and what was popular during certain trends.

What’s Out There?

As usual, if you are aware of any stat packages that already have this feature or one similar to it, please let us know in the comments below.

  1. Wow! Genius! Your ideas surprise me more and more everyday. I’m a relatively new blog-owner so I have been using Google analytics for only 2 weeks so far but I see how your idea can be very important. Maybe email Google about it ;D

But one thing about your idea is that this really only applies to Google Analytics when the website is a blog that generates instant jumps of traffic. A lot of webmasters out there have different types of websites so maybe they don’t find any immediate need for this but it would still be nice. I hope to hear more great things from you!

  2. Kevin,
I actually did email Google a long time ago about this one, but I’m sure I’m not the only guy they’ve gotta read emails from haha.

Also, I think it can apply to more than just blogs. I originally thought of the idea when I was pouring over traffic for a company I help with, High Society Freeride. It’s a ski/snowboard manufacturer and there would be times when the company was featured in a newspaper article, magazine, or there was a discussion about a ski on a forum. It just became too hard to keep track of when those things happened and how they related to the stats.

The Idea Shower site is relatively new, so I was reminded of the idea after starting to see spikes in my own traffic.

Thanks Kevin, hope to see you around here for a while!

  3. Haha thanks for the reply there and the visit to my website. And I can see the point that you are making there plus Google Analytics is the only time when it is fun to watch a line graph. Haha and in reply to your post on the interrobang; too much free time and Wikipedia =P

  4. Interesting you’d have this idea. We had it too and added it to our software (which provides a set of internet marketing tools — including some marketing analytics).

Though we don’t yet identify the top content page and top referral source right on the graph, we do allow attaching marketing “events” to certain days and show it on the graph as you’ve outlined so folks can have a sense of what was going on during those days where traffic peaked.

  5. I agree, I’d love to keep historical stats on my marketing efforts.

    Google is hopefully listening.

  6. Google Analytics only works with users that visit and don’t give a crap about their privacy. Adblock with a well tweaked config takes care of all visits of Google Analytics, always prompting for cookies takes care of that mode of tracking.

That said.. 99% of web users could care less anyway, so call me Don Quixote.

  7. I absolutely agree 100% with the marker idea. These markers could also be very helpful in marking points in time that one carried out various activities such as redesign of your site; move from table based design to css based design; executed off-line marketing campaign etc etc. Google, please add this functionality if you’re out there ad listening.

  9. I had a similar idea a while back. One of our sites saw a 50% jump in traffic on one day and we were all bewildered. It turns out the stock had jumped nearly 5% on that day and trading volume was through the roof. I thought it would be nice to overlay stock price, and volume and put in markers for news releases, earnings reports, etc. Google certainly has the data to drive this feature. I guess if they could grab any RSS feed and lay markers on the graph using that it would be very cool.

  12. I can’t agree with you more. I was looking to see if they did do this, but alas they appear not to. Would be great for own custom labels, particularly if - like me - you run ad campaigns.
