Comment to Email - Wordpress Plugin

Nate Weiner - Posted in Solutions, , Comments (48)

The Comment to Email Wordpress Plugin allows you to reply to a comment and have your response be sent simultaneously to the commenter via email and posted as a regular comment in your comment section, killing two birds with one stone.

As some of you have probably noticed, I like to try to email commenters personally. The main reason I do this is because I assume that the commenter is not going to be checking back routinely to see if I posted a response.

The only problem with emailing a response is that it takes the conversation away from your comment section, meaning anyone else who has the same problem or question will miss the answer. Because of this I would find myself copying and pasting my emails back into the comments, which is just tedious. So I decided to create a better solution.

How it Works

It’s quite simple. After installing the plugin:

  1. Under the Comments menu select ‘Reply to Comments’.
  2. Click ‘Reply’ on the comment you wish to reply to.
  3. Enter your message with WYSIWYG editor.
  4. Click Send.
  5. An email is sent to the commenter and your email is posted as a comment.

Additionally you have the option to BCC yourself on the message so you can get a copy to put into your sent items in your email program.

Features In the Works

As I said, I just quickly whipped this up today and I’m working on another idea at the time being, so I couldn’t do everything I wanted yet. Here’s what I’m hoping to add to it in the near future:

  • Ability to provide independent footers for the email and for the comment. This will allow you to say “I’m going to post this email in the comments so that others can see our discussion” to the email, but not have it appear in the actual comment.
  • Adding a flag in the subject line of the BCC email so that you can setup a message filter in Outlook, Thunderbird, etc to automatically have the BCC’d email drop into your sent items. This way it will be as if you sent it from your own email like normal.
  • What else can you think of?

Install/Configuration

  1. Download the plugin
  2. Upload the plugin to your /wp-content/plugins/ directory
  3. Under the ‘Plugins’ menu in your WP Admin, click ‘activate’ next to the plugin.
  4. Note: The email that messages are sent as (and bcc’d to) is the email address in your user profile in Wordpress. You can change this under the ‘Users’ menu.

Download

Test it out and if you run into any problems, drop me a note in the comments.

Download - Version 0.4 (Requires Wordpress 2.5+)

  7. Great Dan, One suggestion from my side.

I noticed that after the mail is sent it stays idle for a second and the message box appears which confirms the mail is sent. If not a big programtic point we can have a gif animation which can mean the reply is being processed.

Moreover if the page is refreshed The comment which is sent does not appear instantly , If it can be refreshed it will be great.

    Hope they have a point.

    Ashish

  8. I worked around with this plugin and works good. I have one more suggestion.

This plugin does not show for anybody except admin in wordpress user roles. Now lets take an example of multiauthor blog , if he or she wants to use the same feature its not possible.

What I can suggest is this plugin can be enabled for editor and author roles. This way even the authors and editors will be able to communicate with other comments same way.

  9. Ashish! You’re the man, thanks for all the good feedback.

I just put up ver 0.2 which allows authors and editors to use the plugin, in addition to correcting a bug that didn’t carry over the user id to the comment in the database.

  10. Does this work with Subscribe to Comments? You know what would be really cool is if I could just respond to the e-mail notification sent from WordPress, and it would e-mail both the responder and add it to WordPress.

  11. This is an absolutely awsome idea - its so simple, I never would have thought of it!
    Going to download it now!

  12. I reply to comments via the “front” of the blog, more so than via the dashboard. Being able to reply from the main page, with the option to send via email as well.

  14. :( I love this idea, but it doesn’t do anything for me.

When I click on Reply, “error on page” pops up in the status bar. Nothing else happens. :(

  15. Hey Shawn,

What browser are you using?  And do you know what it says the error is?

    Thanks!

  16. Missy,

The plugin has been tested on wordpress 2.3

    Thanks!

  18. Hi! Great idea but I could not make it work under WP 2.3.3… When I click on Reply, it shows the form, but after a second it simply vanishes… I use Firefox 2.0.0.12…

BTW, are there plans to port it to WP 2.5?

  21. Doesn’t seem to be working with 2.5. I’m running Firefox if that matters. When I go to Comments -> Reply to Comments I get….

  22. Ok so I got the 0.3 version and it seems to work fine now. I don’t know if you just put that up, or if I missed it before. Possible I’m just an idiot. :)

    Thanks for the great plugin!

  23. I think this is a great idea.

What I would like to see in the email that is sent to the commenter when I reply is a link back to the blog so they can click on the link and be taken back to the blog to respond to my reply.

  24. hi… all of a sudden (well, i haven’t used it in several weeks), when i click “reply” in the “reply to comments” portion of the wordpress comments, nothing happens. it’s like the link all of a sudden stopped leading anywhere. other links work, so it’s not an issue w/ my browser necessarily.

  26. I’m seeing what Sunil is. WP 2.51, mac/ff2. I do ‘reply”, nothing happens. No mail is sent to the commenter or me as the bcc, and also no comment is added.

I love the concept of the plugin though, and hope to understand how to make it work soon!

  27. Like the two previous comments I cannot get this to work in wordpress 2.5. When I go to “Reply to Comments” everything seems to work just fine but when I send the comment the comment is never emailed and it doesn’t post the comment. Any suggestions? Also, the plugin doesn’t work in IE, which I don’t use but the CEO of my company uses exclusively. Trying to train him on Firefox really doesn’t work, unfortunately. Could you please let me know when you have 2.5 fixed and if you ever plan to have the plugin supported by IE. Thanks.

  28. Nate- I just sent you an email. My company outsourced a programmer to fix Comment 2 Email’s IE problem, wordpress 2.5 problem, and add an additional feature where you can include a different email address than what’s on the author’s profile. The email I sent has the updated plugin attached. Let me know that you received it, and if you have any questions. ~Paul

  29. I love this idea; have just installed it and about to use it. What I’d love though is to be able to set it to use/show a different address other than what’s under my admin panel.

  30. It didn’t seem to work for me =( I tested it by logging out of admin, going to my blog and commenting as reader and using a diff email addy. Then I logged into admin and replied to the comment - didn’t get the comment as an email =( Please help.

  31. Hi Nate,
Thanks for this plugin, which was working great for me.
Unfortunately the reply link no longer works.
I suspect it is a JS problem.
    Firebug gives this problem.
    curCUD is not defined
    c2e_reply(null, a#comment-682_btn)edit-comments.php (line 433)
    onclick(click clientX=0, clientY=0)edit-comments.php (line 1)
    [Break on this error] if (curCid) {

    Any ideas recommended?
Thanks, I liked using this when it worked.

  32. Hi, great idea for a plugin… only I have the same issue as Paul. When I use it to reply to comment, no email is sent and no comment is posted. I am running wordpress 2.5
    Any help would be appreciated.
Reply here so I get an email… thanks!

  33. i want a plugin by which any one can send email to any commenter by a “send email link” in each comment(that should not show the email ID, but it should be simple form like contact page )

  34. I downloaded and activated version 0.3 for my 2.5 WordPress, but as far as I can tell nothing is happening when I reply. I replied to one of my own comments and got no email and the reply didn’t show up in my blog. I replied to someone else’s and the reply never showed up on my blog (I obviously don’t know if the email was sent).

Any ideas? I’d love to have this work.

  36. Hi Nate,

Same problem as chris’s. I activated 0.3 for my WP but when you click on reply button it drops down for you to write reply but when you click on reply to commentator & post the comment it does not give the link i.e it is not working. Kindly sort it out.
    Thanks.

  37. I’m very curious about how it exactly works. Can’t get a clear view by the description….

  38. I’m experiencing the same issue of clicking on reply; Posting the reply but the comment isn’t appearing on my blog comment area and I’m not sure if the emails are even being sent out. I have a self-hosted site and receiving comment notifications without a problem, but was hoping to be able to use this feature.

  39. Not working for me. Dashboard side doesn’t work with IE7, Vista, WP 2.6: Reply link does nothing when clicked. But dashboard side works for me with FF3: Reply link opens editor box and I can compose a reply. But when I click “Post comment…”, the editor box closes, I get no message saying pass or fail, and nothing works: no reply posted, and no email ever received.

To be fair, I’ve never testing sending email from my new web site. So, I can’t positively pin the failure on the plug-in (yet). Kelly Carter, http://newBBie.com.

  40. It never seems to show if the message was sent or not. Nor has it posted the comment when I click post. Also, why does it have to use scripts from your site?

    I’m using 0.3 on Wordpress 2.6

  43. Hi Nate - I came up with a hack that adds a custom footer to the e-mail that is sent out but not to the comment. It requires changing one line in the comment-to-email.php file and adding two new lines, as well as adding a small email_footer.php file to be included (which the user can safely edit).

I’m not sure if it’s of any interest to you since you mentioned you wanted to include a feature like this, but if you want to take a look at my code, just drop me a line. Cheers!

  45. Nate,
When I activated this plugin in 2.3.1 it worked just great for a while, then I stopped being able to reply. The Href for reply was empty.
I updated recently to 2.6.3, upgraded your plugin too cos I missed it functionality. It still has nothing in the reply href (example shown)

I wondered if you have any ideas?
