Add Greater Privacy Controls to RSS
Love it. Well done. Just one suggestion: turn off RSS sharing by default so people who don't know better don't get a shock when they realize they're sharing everything they save.

I was surprised to see after using your excellent add-on the Sync/Online Access on by default. I went to the site and realized that I had never set up an account (so couldn't delete per instructions). Questions: Are my saved URLs somewhere on your site or did the absence of an account preclude them being saved?

Bottom line: Seems like the default should be OFF---Thank you Private comment hidden-

If you have the Firefox extension, you can find your account details by doing the following:
Posted Mar 7 09 reply
- Open the Read It Later options
- Click the RSS/Syncing Tab
- Enabled Syncing
- Setup syncing
- Choose the first option "I am syncing for the first time"
- Then your randomly generated account information will be shown.
If you would like to remove your information, click the 'delete my online reading list' button at the bottom of this window. If prompted to log in, use the information found using the steps above.
Furthermore uncheck the top checkbox to disable saving your list online.
This will make Read It Later only save your items locally and the server will be be updated with the information.
The reason this is defaulted to on is because the overwhelming majority of users use the online list to sync their other computers/phones and use it to view their list in an RSS feed or online.
But I definitely want to make sure people's privacy is respected so you have the above options to ensure that you have full control over your own data.

Thank you for the helpful response. Is it correct that if "online access" and syncing are on, the only access to the saved readit urls is via the username/password and this info is not otherwise "shared" even anonomously with other users.

There is still your RSS feed which would be available to others if they knew your username.

You can protect that however by enabling password RSS protection which is under the RSS/Syncing options as well.
If you enable that, then you can use the online access without any public interface to your data that doesn't require a password.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I think you've now explained the privacy situation very clearly even for the non-expert. RIL is great. Keep up the good work.
