Can't Find Read It Later Button in Firefox

First reported 1030 days ago

I can't even get the buttons to show up on my Firefox GUI. Any ideas?

Resolved with Instruction

First make sure your navigation bar is showing. If you right click on your toolbars, make sure ‘Navigation Toolbar’ is checked. If it is unchecked, select it. You can then move the reading list icon off of the navigation bar by right clicking it, selecting customize, then dragging the button to the desired position.

If your navigation bar is showing, right click on the toolbar and select ‘customize…’ it will pop open a new window with several icons. Scroll through and find the ‘Reading List’ button and drag that onto your toolbar where you’d like it.

In version 2.0 the icon and reading list drop down looks like this:
http://readitlaterlist.com/i/v2/ff_list.png
(Note: the icon may be yellow in Windows/Linux)

For anyone using Firefox on Ubuntu......

Try disabling the Ubufox extension if you have it installed. I found that this extension was causing my disappearing icon problems.

I would setup my icons how I wanted them and close firefox, then open it and all the icons were back to the default configuration. It resolved itself immediately after disabling Ubufox.

You probably mean the extension which is built into Firefox when you install Ubuntu. It's called "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications" on my box.

A lot of people have problems with toolbar icons that were added to the toolbar by an add-on. Examples of this are "Read It Later", "Tab Mix Plus" and "Ad-Block Plus".

It seems that all "Ubuntu Firefox Modifications" does is make it possible to install new Firefox add-ons through the Package Manager on Ubuntu.
It is therefore SAFE TO DISABLE if you do not often install add-ons through the package manager.

I gave up on trying to isolate the problem. I UNinstalled Firefox and all user settings and prefs, then reinstalled. I made RIL my first add-on, and now the button appears as it should -- even after replacing all my other add-ins, too. So, all's well now.

Hi, I had the same problem guys and I found that it was the "TORbutton"(The Onion Ring) extension that made RIL buttons disappear.
I de-activated TOR and now I can put the RID buttons back in the toolbar.

    Hope it helped!

Ok tried enabling, restarting, disabling, restarting, whistling dixie, banging me head against a brick wall and still the icon will not appear on the toolbar nor in the add to toolbar options. Nothing, nada..... I really like this product but something is stopping it from working? YET! the other day it worked fine and appeared every time I loaded Firefox....today..nope, nothing.
I'm running out of ideas to try. I'm going to try and load another product and see if that initiates your product. I know it did last time so we'll see.

Do you have any other add-ons installed? You may want to try disabling all except RIL and see if there is a compatibility issue.

Disabled the java quick starter and I'm afraid I completly uninstalled firefox. Removed everything that was left on my system concerning firefox and cleaned the registry using Ccleaner.
Restarted pc, reinstalled firefox and RIL and voila! it's all working fine. But! There were no errors in the error console involving RIL or firefox. I'm afraid I can't be of any other help in giving any specific answers. I hope that some others may find something in the above that may help.
Thanks for your help and your rapid responses to my questions and problems. Bloody marvellous.

My experience, as with other posters in this thread, is that the instructions for resolving the issue do not work. The navigation bar is visible but the Read It Later (Reading List) icon does not appear when trying to customize the toolbar.

To resolve this issue I disabled every other firefox extension that I am using, restarted firefox, and then the Read It Later icon did appear. I then re-enabled all my other extensions and fortunately the button remained on the toolbar. Puzzling, as there doesn't seem to be an obvious conflict with another extension, but it worked.

      @Steve +1

I had the same problem. The Navigation Toolbar is visible, the ReadingList button was not and was not in the customize toolbar set too.

I disabled all addons and then enabled ReadItLater alone and went to customize toolbar to find the ReadingList button there, dragged it to the Navigation toolbar and re-enabled all other add-ons and it works fine.

    I've the same problem.

My experimentation on disabling all the other plugin to try to isolate the problem get me these results:

When Delicious plugin and Diigo plugin are disabled, if i do Customize Toolbar i find between the icons the RIL icon and i can drag where i want.

Then if I enable Delicious plugin i still see the RIL icon where i dragged before, but if i click again on Customize Toolbar and then (to remove Delicious icon and drag them where i prefer) on Restore default set, RIL icon is removed from the toolbar but is no more avaiable between the draggable icons.

Or if I enable Diigo plugin i still see the RIL icon where i dragged before, but if i click again on Customize Toolbar and then on Restore default set, RIL icon is removed from the toolbar but is no more avaiable between the draggable icons.

interested question since this extension would be quite useful to me IF I could use it:

is it somehow possible to use whilst not seeing the icons in the location bar? because I use the vimperator extension which disables the toolbar (and almost everything else)..

I thought from the config that it would be possible to use ril with hotkeys, but pressing the key combo alt+p, which is the default for "push read it later button" only leads to a box coming up saying "you have no items in your reading list".

so I presume that hotkey is not for adding pages but rather for accessing the list of saved pages. would it be possible to add a hotkey for "save this page"?

then one could use ril together with vimperator (which is the coolest extension EVAR, just saying).

Posted Sep 4 09 Version: 0.9947 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
    • Nate

      Hey Michael

The 'Toggle unread/read' hotkey is what you are looking for. It will save a page (or mark it as read if you already have it saved).

      Posted Sep 4 09 reply
      • Daniel

That might work, but it would be great if there was a "Read It Later" submenu in Tools/Extra, with entries for all Read It later actions:
then those could get mapped/used with Vimperator more easily. E.g. accessing them via the "emenu" command would work.

I had tried the "Open/Close Reading List" shortcur (Alt-Q by default), but it did nothing with Vimperator enabled (and the toolbar disabled). Also for Ctrl-Shift-Q.
Maybe the toolbar must be visible for this shortcut to work, or the shortcut does not arrive at Read It Later.

I found the problem was a newly installed add-on called "Facebook Dislike". It caused a problem with a number of toolbars. I figured out with add-on was causing the problem by disabling all of them but Read it Later and then enabling them one by one until it cause the problem.

I totally agree with you. On top of it, it seems (after reading instructions) that I am not even able to add a page to my "Read it later list" - All I get is this yellow sort of arrow that replaced the brown book and it only opens my current list when I click it. Not being able to add pages to my list through a right-click menu makes this add-on completely useless to me.

I'll be bringing back the right click to save very soon.

The icon in the address bar was there in version 0.9 (for the last year and a half). It's just been updated to use the logo instead of the checkmark.

You can also configure the click action of the button in the Customize tab of the options (if you do not want it to open your list, etc).

What happens to all the things I had put in there?

Do you lose everything every time Foxfire updates the version? If I had known that I would have bookmarked everything instead. It's very frustrating.

Do I have to uninstall FF & put everything back again?
Then I also lose all the info I had in RIL.

      Hey Posy

Updating or reinstalling RIL will not cause you to lose anything if you have an account. Whenever you log into the account your list will be redownloaded.

What version of the add-on do you have? Can you make sure you are upgraded to the latest (2.0.3)?

Nate: You asked if the RIL icon reappeared when I restarted FF. (I know you changed the icon by the way.) Well, that question seemed a bit odd to me. -- I tried all the normal stuff long before I wrote you. -- So, I tried an experiment: I'm in the habit of "restoring" my previous session when I start FF. When I did so, the icon was still missing. Then I restarted FF and did not restore the previous session. Presto! The icon appeared. Perhaps this will help you and others. And, thank you for such a speedy reply. I didn't realize how much I clicked that little red icon, now yellow, before.

    Hi Nate,

I started to download RIL from the link you gave me & Firefox blocked the downloading. I didn't continue with it. I think it's strange that if it's a FF add on that it would block it! I think I remember this happening the first time I downloaded it. Why is that?

How do I figure out which version I have or which account? I assume I have the latest because when I let FF update that it did that also. Actually I remember 2 or 3 add ons updating recently. It popped up when I was in the middle of doing something so I didn't notice which ones they were. I only have about 6 add ons.

How do I get to the place where I log into my account?

Actually I think I found the NEW icon that looks like a
YELLOW ARROW FACING RIGHT. It is on the far right edge of the bar next to the place with a drop down arrow where you can choose Google etc.

I have Vista so I don't know if its the same on other OS.

Maybe this will help others who can't find the RIL button. Maybe theirs has moved off the address bar too & maybe they didn't realize there was a new-different icon for RIL.

Thanks for the quick response, Nate.

Firefox just prompts you before you install any new add-ons for security purposes. Otherwise sites would be able to install add-ons in your browser without your permission. When Firefox asks, click 'allow' if you'd like to install Read It Later.

When starting RIL the first time it will prompt you for your account. If you are just upgrading however, you'll need to open the options and select the account section.

You can find the version number in your add-on list. In Firefox open the Tools menu -> Add-ons. Then find Read It Later in the list.

      Hope that helps!

    xerxes24 you said above......

In my case it was also "HP WebSmart Printing" Add-on, that broke RIL from working!

I think you are on to something. I think HP software is causing trouble with the RED Check mark Icon for RIL in the navigation bar to vanish!! Others that have that problem until there is a fix, try to unload your HP software that loads and gives HP printer features such as two way communication scanning, or two sided printing, it is software that loads and leaves icons in your lower right tool bar in XP for example

I can get the RED check mark to disappear and come back in the navigation bar by loading or closing HP SOLUTION Center. I got a new printer scanner Fax and the HP Solution Center software causes the RED Check to be invisible with no way to get it back.... unless I close the HP solution center software that should be running when the printer is on, can this be fixed for a later build? I've lost the RIL icon at the right of the browser window, so I can't access my "saved" pages anymore. I've tried everything that has been listed in this thread (that applied to my installed browser version, Firefox 3.5.8), but I still cannot get the RIL icon that has been there for over the past year (next to the red check mark in the address bar) to show up. I am severely hurt by this. If I had known it might disappear, I would have added my RIL pages to my bookmarks and now I would still have them available to me. As it is, I'm afraid I've lost all reference to them and of course I can't remember them. What a disappointment!

Is it possible to download an older version of RIL (when it was still working) to see if that will bring my saved pages back?

All right, I'm back to normal again, using RIL 2.0.3 in Firefox 3.5.8, with all my original RIL "bookmarks" still in place. The problem I was having (see above) has been solved. It was caused by installing another FF add-on by the name of Vertical Bookmarks Toolbar. Once I uninstalled that and reinstalled RIL 2.0.3, all fell back in place and was fixed.

Regarding the problem with the RIL icon and Reading list not showing up in the Navigation toolbar, I like many others had the same problem. Upon others suggestions I disabled all other extensions in Firefox and restarted Firefox. Having done this, the icons appeared and RIL worked properly. Upon re-enabling all the other extensions, the RIL icon and Reading List once again failed to appear.

Next I tried disabling individual Extensions. In my case I discovered that disabling the ZoneAlarm Toolbar Ver. 1.5.53.4 allowed RIL to display its icon and the Reading List and once again work properly. When I toggled the ZoneAlarm Toolbar Extension on and off, the RIL icon and reading list appeared and disappeared accordingly.

At present, I have the ZoneAlarm extension disabled and RIL is working okay. Time will tell if this is a permanent fix. Hopefully, the apparent conflict will be resolved in the future so I can use both together. Hope this is helpful to those having the same problem

Hey, I've been using RIL for a while. Today is the first time that the icon has ever disappeared for me.

I think in my case it was a bug caused by switching back and forth between 4.02b and 3.6.8. I know that Firefox 4 is not supported yet, so I wasn't surprised to not see RIL while I was running that client. However, when I came back to 3.6.8 it had disappeared. I was able to bring it back by following your instructions (right-click, customize, drag icon back) but just figured I'd leave this comment here in case anyone else got confused.
