Error when starting Firefox: nsINavHistoryService error

First reported 743 days ago

I've been using Read It Later for quite awhile without any problems. (BTW, it's
a GREAT app!) Over the last few days, however, at Firefox startup &
sporadically at other times (I haven't figured out if there's any pattern), I
get an error dialog:

Javascript Application

There was a problem starting Read It Later. Try restarting Firefox, if this
happens again, let us know at ideashower.com. The following error message might
be helpful to the developer when reporting the problem:

[Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)
[nsINavHistoryService.executeQuery]" nsresult: "0x8000ffff
(NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)" location: "JS frame ::
chrome://isreaditlater/content/ISRIL.js :: anonymous :: line 366" data: no]

If I look at the pages it's collected, RIL says I have NONE, which is definitely
not the case! The bookmarks folder is there & has many bookmarks within it.

I have no idea what's changed. I updated to the latest RIL AFTER encountering
the problem, and it's still there. I did have some problems with Foxmarks where
I lost all my bookmarks. But I restored them from the previous night's backup,
which Foxmarks keeps on its servers.

I'm running Windows XP Pro SP2, Firefox 3.0.1, the most recent version of RIL.

Do you have any idea what's going on?

Thanks for your help!

Dave

Resolved with Instruction from the Developer:

If anyone else had further issues with this, I would recommend upgrading to the 2.0 beta:

http://readitlaterlist.com/blog/2009/09/read-it-later-20-beta-1/

Otherwise, if you continue to use version 0.9, please see the notes below:

-------------

If Read It Later cannot access Firefox’s bookmarks then it can’t access your Read It Later folder. Typically this means there is a problem with your actual Firefox install, not Read It Later.

There are a number of reasons this could happen including corrupted bookmarks or conflicts with other extensions or programs.

Here are the suggested steps to diagnosis and correct the problem.

First: Reset Your Read It Later Folder

If you open Firefox and enter this into location bar:
about:config
(hit go or enter)

Then in the filter field paste in:
isreaditlater.folder

It should show two lines folderGUID and folderId.
Right click both and click ‘reset’.

Then restart Firefox.

This will force Read It Later to select a new folder to store your Read It Later items into (which you can change back under options).

Second: Reinstall Firefox

Your bookmarks file may be corrupted. Try reinstalling Firefox to solve this issue.

Last: Check the Comments or Post Your Issue Below

If you still cannot get it to work, read over the comments below or post your issue and I’ll try to help as best I can! If you make any progress or solve this issue with a method not listed here, please let the community know below!

    @Dave

    That error normally happens when the bookmarking service in Firefox failed to start or didn't start before RIL is fired up.

    Strange though that it would happen periodically for you. Do you have any other bookmarking related add-ons installed?

    A few days ago I emailed you a list of my bookmark-related addons. Today I had another thought ... NoScript. This blocks running of Javascript unless overridden by the user. But I disabled it & restarted FF3 ... problem still there. The RIL error dialog appears when starting FF3 & when clicking some links, as well as RIL not recognizing all the webpages I had previously selected.

    One ways to generate the error dialog every time is to click on a program name in DirecTV's TV Planner. This is a Javascript Application popup which appears:

    There was a problem starting Read It Later. Try restarting Firefox, if this happens again, let us know at ideashower.com. The following error message might be helpful to the developer when reporting the problem:

    Great Add-on! This replaced my "temp" bookmarks folder, and is much more useful. But, today I've had problems. Every time I start Firefox 3.0.1 I receive this error message:
    [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED) [nsINavHistoryService.executeQuery]" nsresult: "0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://isreaditlater/content/ISRIL.js :: anonymous :: line 366" data: no]

    I sync my reading list between my laptop and desktop, and so far my desktop has been fine.
    Great job on this add-on so far!

    @Thaddeus

    Are you still having a problem with Read It Later?

    Normally that happens when Firefox's bookmarking service fails to start. If you restart Firefox/your computer it normally goes away.

    If it's still happening, do you have any additional bookmarking related add-ons installed, like Foxmarks?

    I'm facing the same issue as Craig did. "There was a problem starting Read It Later"...etc. And more detailed here:

    [Exception... "Component returned failure code: 0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED) [nsINavHistoryService.executeQuery]" nsresult: "0x8000ffff (NS_ERROR_UNEXPECTED)" location: "JS frame :: chrome://isreaditlater/content/ISRIL.js :: anonymous :: line 366" data: no

    Before this all happened, firefox went haywire and I got a white screen of death. After restarting my desktop, I fired up firefox, only to find that all Add-Ons had resetted to their default settings, while other Firefox settings also went back to default.

    I'm using Windows XP Pro, Firefox 3.0.1

    Do you know when this started happening? I'm starting to get more reports of this error and I'm wondering if it has something to do with the upgrade to Firefox 3.0.3.

    Regardless, here is how to resolve it:

    If you open Firefox and enter this into location bar:

    Then in the filter field paste in:

      I didn't read all of the posts here because it suddenly occurred to me that I had just installed Foxy Tunes.
      I wasn't receiving the detailed error messages that others are reporting, just that Firefox was unable to open the RIL folder. Also, every page I opened had the check icon already red, as if it had been clicked.
      I un-installed Foxy Tunes and restarted FF. The check/click icon was clear and the reading list opened but now every entry was dated 47 days ago.
      I should add that I never lost the ability to access the Read It Later folder through the bookmarks tab in the menu.
      I just clicked the check mark to test and was able to go from red back to clear; beyond that I haven't done any further testing.

    What worked for me was:

    1. deleting the bookmark.html and and localstore.rdf in the firefox
    installation directory

    2 reset the browser.places.*folderId prefs to -1 on the about:config page

    I believe this reset Firefox’s bookmark cache.

    FYI
    This may help troubleshoot other ppls issues:
    I am running Ff 3.01 Portable version, and i found that when i switch computers and then check my bookmarks or history my "places" get corrupted. I did a search and found the fix in the Ff support dialogs. The fix is easy enough (rename 2 files something like places.sqllite) but then I had to do your about:config fix as well for RIL to work.
