How do I downgrade from the Firefox extension 2.0 to 0.9?

Please check these notes first if you are having problems with 2.0:

Questions about 2.0, Xmarks, syncing and not saving in bookmarks anymore:
    (link coming very soon)

    Missing or jumbled list problems:
    (link coming very soon)

    ----

    How to downgrade:

    1. In the location bar enter: 'about:config' and hit go.
    2. In the filter field enter 'isreaditlater'
    3. Click the 'Type' column to sort the items by type
    4. Find all of the entries with the type 'boolean'
    5. Right click each one and select 'reset'
    6. Download version 0.9: http://readitlaterlist.com/d/read_it_later-0.9948-fx.xpi
    7. Open the file from Firefox (File menu -> Open File)
    8. Install and restart Firefox

    ----

If you are missing your items afterwards, no fear, they are still in your Firefox bookmarks:

    1. Open your reading list
    2. Click the options button
    3. On bottom of the general tab you'll see a dropdown list of your bookmark folders, select your Read It Later folder

Very disappointed in change. Not a techie. Is there a way to just uninstall the "new" Read It Later and reinstall the earlier version without having to go through all of the above downgrade steps? I wish that you had a "warning" on the update or not option -- I was quite happy with the old version and would not have updated. The read it later icon is also gone. I counted on this as an important resource and tool. Never had any issues with it.

To get the symbol back, right-click the menu bar and say customize. You can them put it back on the window.

I also find it a very stupid idea to take it away from the bookmarks section... that allowed to read it later on more than one pc, together with Xmarks...
I would really prefer that one back. It facilitates my reading on my three pcs, including my laptop in university.

this issue is the most important disadvantage of the 2.x version. very stupid indeed.

please build the old-fashioned bookmark way back into 2.0 as an option!

please don't FORCE us to use an not longer supported version just to sync with Xmarks or even worse to install another extension with RIL2 just to have an functionality back that many of us rely on. Using two syncing services is also not a very elegant idea, sorry.

and last but not least, the downgrading process is too complicated for most users out there!

RIL had been such a perfect tool. I understand very well the outcry among users and the very bad ratings on the Mozilla-addon-page. It's well deserved!

Synchronizing seamlessly between computers using Xmarks was one of the best features of this program, and never cause any issues for me. Removing that is a big deal.

Thanks for the quick downgrade instructions, I hope you reconsider this. I for one have no need of a separate extension / synching mechanism to get back the functionality I already had.

Running on 10.6 and Windows XP.

OK, now I've upgraded to 2.0 and downgraded back to 0.9 on one of my PCs. How do I avoid this whole upgrade/downgrade process and skip the upgrade on the other two, where firefox has not been restarted in a few days?

The reason for my sticking with what works? I depend on the firefox awesomebar search integration to find the things I've tagged RIL. I'm probably going to work RIL out of my workflow and just count on xmarks and FF one-click-bookmarking if RIL can't make bookmarks. I won't use a dead version forever.    Private comment hidden

There wasn't a trick. When I restarted firefox on another machine, I just told it not to update that add-on by unchecking the box. Now if I have to do that every time I restart firefox, I guess I'll look into the about:config settings listed above and see if any of them exist and can be reset.

I downgraded it for the same reason: 'awesomebar search integration'.

And I might stick to it as long as possible:
      1, XMarks is blocked by Chinese government (for reasons I don't know);
2, plus I just want a lightweight bookmark sync, and don't want to mess ALL bookmarks on work pc with home pc's, and the config seems a bit confusing to me.

Your reasons are exactly the reason why you SHOULD use RIL's sync and not Xmarks sync.

RIL only syncs your reading list, not all of your bookmarks.

Not sure your post makes sense....

I think Im going to downgrade. I miss the right click menu where you could save the article , instead now I have to go up to the url bar and do it there. Not fun or convenient. Bring back the right click option.

    Don't know how to downgrade.
Wish Read it Later is -as it was- before 2.0.
Worked fine, never had a problem.

I absolutely loved 0.9, the new one looks like a Microsoft product and I have downgraded. Syncing with Xmarks is a strong reason I use RIL.

Our entire company used Read It later. Every day we hand picked over 2000 stories. This morning, everyone upgrade and the entire process came to a screeching halt. Not impressed.

man, I tried to do the downgrade, on a mac, FF 3.55, went through all the steps, not ALL the items labled BOOLEAN in the about:config box seemed to make any changes when I clicked reset.

It SEEMS to have downgraded to .9, but now I don't have ANY RIL MENU BAR ICON, and have no real way to get into the application? Where did it go, and what is the best method to get it back? Re-install AGAIN? Uninstall and re-install?

I followed the downgrade instructions but some of the boolean variables didn't want to reset and now I don't have any RIL button to show the popup list. Any idea?

same issue I posted above, I don't know where the RIL button has gone, I also didn't have to download the .9 application, a pop-up appeared and it just did the install. Maybe that was part of the problem?

Hey Nicolas (any anyone else with this issue)

Check out this thread if you are missing the RIL button, if you are hiding toolbars, it may be on one of them:

Oh, found the missing button in the "Customize" menu by right-clicking somewhere on the right side of the address bar.

Had another problem: a "keySet[1] undefined" (or something like that) that might have been caused by my deleting all hotkeys under RIL 2.0. After resetting all hotkeys in about:config and restarting Firefox, RIL 0.9 now seems to be working again! With items in the correct order, the age display, and items that don't disappear immediatly after clicking them, I'm glad.

Well, ReadItLater WAS a favorite of mine...if the plan is to continue with the idea of making it incompatible with XMarks, then...time to find another addon to use for the same purpose...too bad...ReadItLater USED to be a good addon, one of my favorites...maybe when the bookmark synchronization is restored, i'll try it again...Uninstalling now...

I have a somewhat ambivalent disposition towards these changes.
I like like like the new design, but I need the xmarks fucntionality:/
I like the fact that the darned bookmarks from RIL will be gone, but than again, I need the xmarks functionality :/

To the whiners: seriously, get a fucking grip.
Sure the update is kind of annoying, but downgrading is easy and demands only little time.
And think about the great functions this app offers?

I would like to just say a great, big, THANK YOU to the developer, this app is effing awesome!

So, I am trying to downgrade because I am one of those people who tried everything you suggested but can't get the 2.0 icon onto my nav bar.

But - great - I can't downgrade either! I followed your initial steps and sorted by type. All the "Type" fields say STRING not BOOLEAN....

    So, what do I do?

i downgraded immediately .new version is not good at all
a lot of functionality missing and looks bad, articles are harder to read in the list. dont like the option that articles are not in my bookmarks but somewhere on internet. old version also integrates very well into my firefox themes, i like the option to see how many days articles have been on the list. anyway, dont get me wrong i really like this extension i use it all the time, but i will stick to older version 0.9
sorry for my bad english, cheers :)

Upgrading to version 2.0.x, which I thought would simply be an improvement on 0.9, destroyed my reading list. It no longer sync's with Xmarks and now everything is out of order. (Where did the dates go? And how come nothing sorts properly anymore?) The new interface also looks goofy, but that is the least of our worries.

The biggest grievance we have with 2.0.x is the fact that it tries to compete with Xmarks with its own sync service! We don't need TWO sync services. Could you imagine if we had to use a separate sync service for each folder in our bookmarks? Having a "Read It Later" folder that was 100% compatible with Xmarks was a brilliant and intuitive idea! Two addons, which each offered their own unique features, combined beautifully together: Xmarks kept everything in sync between multiple computers, and Read It Later was a convient way to manage a reading list.

I will not be using Read It Later anymore. I'm sure someone out there is probably going to create a new addon that does what version 0.9 did and not write any updates that will ruin something good.    Private comment hidden

For people wanting to disable the update of v0.9 to v2.x, you can open about:config, then right click and create a new boolean named:
    extensions.isreaditlater@ideashower.com.update.enabled
    and give it the value:
    false.

    (As explained at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Updating_extensions#Disabling_update_checks_for_individual_add-ons_-_Advanced_users )

I was very happy with the Read It Later old version. But the new version (2.0) has automatically updated and gave me so many issues. The main two issues are it doesn't sync with Xmarks and changed the order (display old bookmarks first) of bookmarks in the read It Later list.

I downgraded to 0.9. But I still have the bookmarks order issue. I uninstalled Firefox completely and installed two two times but problem never solved.

So Please help me to changed the order of my bookmarks in the Read It Later list. I need to display new bookmarks first as usual.

    Thanks !

I just wondered why my xMarks didn't work anymore.
    Now I now.
Really a bad idea to try to force me to use your Server for my data. I use xMarks with my own WebDAV and it should stay that way. This means I have to downgrade.
Why I ther no option to use the bookmarks?

Yes VERY disappointing. It needs to be added back for sure. or at least another general tab so we can choose where we want to store then..

As that was so much better, faster and more convent.. because you could just backup your bookmarks and the read it later would backup with it. Could back it all up, bookmarks and readitlater links all at once. Real fast and simple.

Great addon tho i mean but.. yeah should not of changed that.

Posted Feb 12 10 Browser: Firefox 3.5 reply
  • B.SkiLLs

Not to mention you should of warned people with a pop up during install or something because i just lost tons of important read it later links.. Cause i just reformatted my computer and only backed up my bookmarks directory because i thought that is where they was still stored.

So i didnt backup the new spot where they are stored and i never use the sync system at all. So yeah now i lost them mostly.

I just went back to the old version and its showing me the latest date ones was back from 130 days ago.

    Thanks a lot. :(
