New iphone version
Your new iphone version sucks. Text version is badly formatted when it's present. I switch back to instapaper until you fix this.
For your tests, try articles in www.numerama.fr

Hey Chino

I just tried two pages from that site and they appear to format correctly for me.
Can you be more specific as to what doesn't look right to you? You can also send a screenshot to RIL@ideashower.com
Thanks! -

First, excuse my poor english : i'm french...

I love using Read It Later with my iPod Touch to read articles or tech notes with text display : the text reformating is very useful in conjunction with font size adjust on narrow screen like iPhone or iPod Touch. I fist discovered instapaper then I choose Read It Later because of the ability to add a link directly while you read a text.
So i focus on the "text only" display
There's an accent issue with this page "http://www.victor-hugo.info/poemes/338.html" on previous versions, it was a blank page.
with this page : "http://www.numerama.com/magazine/12973-La-preuve-par-la-crise-que-l-Internet-est-un-bien-essentiel.html" I need to "show more" to read the main artile body. by the way, The right and left margin are far too big. 4 or 8 pixels is enough. I don't like the L&R justified text. With 4 or 5 words, the spaces between words is 3 or 4 em.
This page "http://mediatomb.cc/pages/documentation" is no more readable : it jumps to the section 4.2.2 (why ?) and the "show more" options display the menu (ok, it's a crappy html table) on lt left, And even with the smaller font, I can't fit the line on my display.
Why not let us choose "show more" or "less" by default in the preferences ?

With the victor-hugo page, what are the accent issues you are seeing? I'm not seeing anything immediately obvious. Here is what it looks like for me: http://i44.tinypic.com/2zps7d1.jpg

If the pages do not look like the screenshots above, I'd suggest logging out, relogging in, and redownloading the articles.
As far as the margins, this is something I'll consider adding as a configurable option. Also, if you want to fit more words per line, I'd suggest decreasing the font size (you can do this by opening the text options).
With the mediatomb documentation, there are definitely going to be cases where the text parser is not going to be able to find the perfect match. The less view is more focused on trying to find articles, which generally have a main headline, some subheadlines and paragraph text. This documentation has several main headlines and sections so I can see why the Less parser is confused. For these cases, I built the less strict More parser to allow greater flexibility, but as you can see it comes at some cost.
I'm continually working to improve compatibility for all websites. The best thing you can do is report any URL that does not render well here:
http://ideashower.com/support/read-it-later/report-pages-not-saving-well-offline-here/
As you can see from that thread, I made sure all of the reported pages worked in version 1.2 and I will do the same for any newly reported pages in the next versions.
Thanks for your help.

I have similar problems with version 1.2. The previous version offline text was much better. I suggest an option for users to set margin size and line spacing might overcome these problems. In version 1.2 there is too much dead space on the small iPhone screen.

I totally agree about the margin size needing to be smaller/customizable. Right now I feel Read It Later gets the offline web version right and Instapaper gets the text only version right.

Thanks to the logout-login, the display is much better.
Posted May 23 09 reply
But the new parser is still long and skip some datas.
Maybe a simple raw display, with a basic css ? (without cutting the tags ;-)
Beware of the backgrouds : your html display is not fully cleared before showing a new page. First, the user believe he tapped the wrong item, second, the next page keep attributes from the previous one (try with a page with a dark background and another with an implicit white one (i.e. with no background defined)
Thanks for your work. -

Regarding the shortage or words per line, partly this is because full justification is turned on. I don't think there is a way to turn this off in the options.

The new version seems to crash more than the last. I never remember the last version crashing. Is anyone having similar issues? Private comment hidden

Hey B

Can you send me the crash logs?
To get crash logs:
1. Sync your phone from iTunes
2. Look in ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/MobileDevice/
3. You should see some files with Read It Later in the name. There should be a .crash file, can you send me the latest? (you may have to sort by date to find the latest one)
4. Email the .crash file to RIL@ideashower.com (Also if you can provide some details as to what you were doing during the crash that would be very helpful)
Thanks!

Glad to see options for margins being implemented in an upcoming update, the margins really are far too large...

I forgot, I downloaded the home webpage for TouchMyApps, and the webpage shows beautifully (far better than the previous version), but the right hand margin of links in that webpage got moved to the bottom in RIL. It would be great if RIL could present all webpages as they appear on the internet..
Posted Jun 1 09 reply
My other complaint is the icon doesn't look terribly cool. Some cool text icon instead?
Just out of curiousity, would RIL be willing to work with other app companies like Tweetie and MyWebClip? It would be awesome if you did! -

Hey guys

Just wanted to let you know that version 1.3 is coming out soon but the margin options are not included in it. I'm putting that in a batch of updates I'll be making on improving/adding options to the text view in general.
There is a lot of good stuff in the new update though, so hopefully you don't have too many complaints :)

>> Please add a toggle button to the Options menu so users can disable horizontal accelerometer, to the phone can be "locked" for when you're lying in bed and want to read your news..
This is a major let down for me, and I'm sure for several other users. The accelerometer trying to be "smart" by detecting your horizontal position and switching the screen is just.. useless and a headache.
thanks, and keep up the good work! RIL is awesome.-

nah, never mind! Spoke too soon...

Just now I saw that RIL Pro has Rotation Lock functionality (among other goodies). Just did the upgrade and I'm really enjoying it!
(btw, you guys just did a MUCH better job with the rotation lock than crappy apple apps (safari/mail). It's just friendly and useful).
Great work, thanks! Private comment hidden

There are 2 things I would like to see in the next Pro iPhone version:
Posted Nov 23 09 reply
1. being able to label my RIL links to something that makes more sense to me, rather than the crappy titles given by the website - perhaps some sort of pop-up box when you click RIL that allows freeform text?
2. The ability to re-order the Currently Reading list, so that I am able to group similar articles together.
Looking forward to seeing the new version. -

I'm just going to say two thumbs up from me... the new version does everything the last one did but with a slicker more useful interface. and Tags! (as folders) is perfect... cleans up a messy list and i can get rid of all the streaming or high graphic pages from the iphone. Thanks!

Um..nope no request from me... I'm sure I'll find something soon. Thanks again! -

If an article has multiple pages, how can I view the other pages? I see it get saved when it downloads, but in the new version I can find the button like I could in the old version.
