The "Read Later" plugin is great idea. I hope that you continue development. I would love a drop down selection of reading material rather than having to flash through the items to find the one I want to read now. Good luck! Thanks.

I like the general idea of this extension, but my solution to the same problem is to use delicious and then bookmark things with _TO_BE_READ so I can return to them later. Using the generic Yahoo! created delicious firefox extension, I can then just pull up all records with that tag on the left side and read them.

I don't mean to suggest that my way is better (though for me, it is) but I thought I'd throw that out there as an alternative.

Wow, this is exactly what I needed! For the past year or so I've been keeping articles I want to read at some future date saved in my Bloglines RSS feeds -- which clutters up the feeds rather quickly. This is a much better solution!

    Two suggestions:

    1) A way to browse the entire reading list. I have dozens of saved URLs but only the first 11 or so show up in the drop-down box. One option would be to show them in the sidebar.

    2) An option to automatically group saved pages from the same domain under a folder for that site. I have a lot of Lifehacker saved pages, for instance, and it would be neat if I could have tell the extension that when saved pages from the same domain reach X saved articles then move them to a folder for that domain. (And allow random to span the folders).

Thanks for the amazing idea and great work!

THANKS for converting this great idea !

I installed your extension Version 0.5 on FF 2.0.0.9 but it does not work. I choose several pages and links by clicking the context menu “Read this link later” “Read this page later”. But nothing happens pressing the Icon on the top. No drop down appears. The only working is the tool tip “Read something from your reading list”

I installed and uninstalled the extension three times with the same result. Any ideas ?

Why not just install the del.icio.us bookmark extension. Right-click all links that you want to read later and give them a tag (e.g., 'digglater'). Del.icio.us can even spit out an RSS feed for that list that you're making allowing you to take it with you or publish it elsewhere.

This is a good idea. But I have a few comments:
    1) why handle these separately from bookmarks?
    2) how do you manage large reading lists?

To give you some background, I've been using a system like this for years: http://blog.monstuff.com/archives/000033.html
I currently have about 700 things to read, and I have thousands which I have read and are archived. It is a single system for bookmarks and things to read.
This unified solution is really bare-bone (the UI is pretty crude), but actually quite powerful: I don't have to think about whether I should bookmark or simple "read it later", I can search my current active bookmarks (using Firefox "search in page") and I can search my history/archive. Finally, there is no synching problem as my bookmarks are on the web.

Found a bug: I marked some pages for later reading. When paging through them, I got a page I wanted to read later but not now (it had a video and I don't have headphones at work). I didn't want to "mark this page as read", so I clicked the "read something from your list" button thinking I could just go on with the next item and come back to this one latter. Apparently this *also* marked it as read, I guess I have two buttons that do the same thing and I've lost my video.

I looked for such an extension for some time and in the end i made a simple one myself!

Like the quicklist in youtube, i put a link into a list with ctrl+click. Later i can visit them in any order, and they removed from the list after visiting. The list is session-safe.

It is very useful for reading articels in the newpapers and watching videos, where opening multiple video tabs would result in multiple videos playing at the same time.

If i knew so many people looking for it, i would publish it :)

Concurrency bug: if you press the "Read something from your reading list" button, then switch to another tab (a page not on your reading list), when the to-read page loads, the button on the unrelated tab you're on switches to "Mark this page as read", while the to-read page still hase the "Save this page for later" button.

Means the code shouldn't change the status of the tab which is currently active, because it could have changed before the requested page is loaded.

SUGGESTION: If you are going to say you can use the Read it Later program ANY where- ANY browser-- if should A) have some directions how to use it properly/successfully in any Browser B) have instructions/install for ANY browser.

I don't always have Fire-Fox available to me- it really sucks that that also means I don't have my Read-it-Later list or functions when this happens. Got a suggestion or an answer already for this problem? I would love to get an email about it! Thanks-

I'd like to mark a page to be "Read Later" with a default tag [say 'now'] (Set in the options) and then use the default "read now" tag [again say 'now'].

The idea is that I would use "Read-Now" both as a short term remember and read soon, these I'd leave tagged 'now' and then un read-now when I read them. On the other hand, I'd also use it as a longer term storage, and I'd tag those with other tags.

"Here are a few ways you can remove an item from your list in Firefox:

    1. Open the page and then click the red checkmark in the location bar

    2. Open your reading list, locate the item you want to remove and uncheck the red checkmark (it will turn empty). Close your list"

Why is step #1 needed now? In the past, I would delete items using step #2 ONLY, but not now! What changed?

    Posted Nov 10 08 reply
  • Gary

Maybe I misunderstood. Regardless, after installing the latest update for FF3, marking something as read does not remove it from my list, as it did in the past.

    Posted Nov 10 08 reply
  • polo

Since the last one or two updates the facility to remove items from the reading list by just clicking on the list itself and unticking them from the list does not work.

What happens is that the item appears to be removed but once the list is opened again the item is back in place.

The only method to remove them is to either go the page in question and unticking them in the address bar or to edit the bookmarks

I've got a bbc.co.uk article that I cannot remove. It virtually ruins the program. CNN articles give the program fits as well.

    @mdes

You can add a page that you've read back to your reading list the same way you added it the first time. Open the page and click the checkmark in the location bar or right click a link and 'save link for later'.
